How to Measure the Size of a Bike

Cycling is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the world. Everyone probably wears out a few bikes in their lifetime. But when you buy a bike, it's important to find the right size right away. Choosing the right frame size is crucial to a good cycling experience! Do you know how to determine bike size the right way?

Cycling enjoyment depends on the right frame size. If the frame is too big, the handlebars may be too far away and if the frame is too small, the saddle may not be high enough. To have control over your bike and to prevent physical complaints during and after cycling, it is important to choose the right frame size.

How Do You Measure the Frame Size of a Bike?

Here are a few tips to help when calculating the bike size:

  1. Take off your shoes and stand between 15-20 cm from your knees.
  2. Measure the height of the crotch from the ground down.
  3. Make sure you know what kind of bike you want: mountain bikes, city bikes, road bikes. In our previous blogwe explained the difference between all the different types of bikes.
  4. Grab your calculator and calculate the correct result.
It is best to round down.

City bike - inseam (cm) x 0.685 = The size of your frame.

Mountain bike - inseam (cm) x 0.66 = The size of your frame.

Road bike - inseam (cm) x 0.70 = The size of your frame.

Example: Let's take an inner leg length of 76 cm. This means: City bike: 76 x 0.685 = 52.06.
Mountain bike: 76 x 0.66 = 50.16
Road bike: 76 x 0.70 = 53.2.

Not really a fan of math? No worries! We have attached a graph for each bike. Please note that the result may be slightly different from reality. These graphs are an indication. After all, not everyone has the same legs.
